Dr Uche Anuforo, a Consultant Pathologist with the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, on Saturday called for the early diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB), to prevent death.
The pathologist told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki that the disease was a contagious bacterial infection caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which affects the lungs and organs in the central nervous system.
He said the disease could spread from person to person through the air, by sneezing, coughing and spiting. “These propel the disease into the air.”
According to Anuforo, the disease is of two types, Latent Tuberculosis and Active Tuberculosis; the active one could be fatal and is most common during the dry season.
He said the disease could be highly risky among the elderly, people with a weakened immune system from HIV or AIDS and health workers exposed to patients with the disease.
The pathologist said the disease was readily curable and could be treated promptly, especially when diagnosed early.
“Tuberculosis is a discomforting condition that can be prevented when diagnosed in the early stage of the disease.The disease can be fatal, if left untreated and could result in death,” he said.
