Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has said that the country can only be productive if its borders are secure from external intruders, adding that if the borders are not well secure there cannot be internal security.
Tunji-Ojo pointed out that once there are no protective borders there cannot be productivity as productivity is a function of internal security.
The minister spoke yesterday in Jos at the Nigeria immigration service Comptroller General Annual Conference 2024.
He said that the role of Immigration therefore cannot be relegated to the background, charging the immigration service to be proactive in all its activities.
According to him, immigration cannot achieve its objectives without collaboration with other sister agencies and the Customs Service which he said is very key to success.
He charged the immigration service to check the national border security with collaboration with other security agencies.
On her part, the Comptroller General of Immigration, Mrs. Kemi Nana Nandap, said that the theme of the conference was very apt as it bothers on “Enhancing border Security and Migration Management in a Globalised World Challenges and Opportunities for Nigeria”,
Nandap expressed her gratitude to all and sundry of the guests. She also advised that the borders should be jealously guarded to ensure the safety of Nigerian borders with other countries.
She disclosed that Nigeria has over 4000 kilometres with neighbouring counties.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang represented by the secretary to the Government of the State, Mr. Samuel Jatau, praised all those who journeyed to grace the occasion especially the comptroller General of the Immigration Kemi Nandap whose leadership has introduced commendable initiative for border security management.
According to the governor, her forward thinking approach to employing advanced technology for border surveillance has been instrumental in addressing the challenges posed by illegal immigration.
