KANO (Sundiata Post) – Governor Abba Yusuf presented a historic N549.16 billion 2025 budget to the Kano State House of Assembly, prioritising education, health, and infrastructure.

Dubbed the “Budget of Hope, Human Capital, and Economic Development,” the plan directs 57 per cent toward capital projects (N312.63 billion) and 43 per cent to recurrent expenditure (N236.53bn), underscoring the administration’s commitment to development and growth.

In a bold move, education received the largest share at N168.35bn, or 31 per cent of the total budget—a record for any single ministry in Kano. Health follows with 16.5 per cent (N90.6bn), and infrastructure development at 12.87 per cent (N70.68bn). Other allocations include governance institutions at 17.57 per cent (N98.24bn), security and justice at four per cent (N23.46bn), and agriculture at 3.83 per cent (N21.04bn).

“Our focus for 2025 is human capital and infrastructural development,” Yusuf stated, stressing the administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality education despite limited resources. He announced plans to revive the Kano Education Development Support (KEDS) agency to support educational funding, expressing confidence that the legislature would back the initiative. “I believe the legislature will give the necessary legal teeth in fine-tuning its edict for full implementation.”

Governor Yusuf also highlighted proposed legislative reforms, including bills for social protection, education trust, security, and civil service, which are aimed at reinforcing governance and supporting long-term growth.

He emphasised that the 2025 budget reflects a strategic focus on balancing social needs with economic goals. “We will not relent in our resolve to alleviate poverty, restore hope, create wealth, generate employment, and stimulate agriculture for the overall well-being of our people,” he affirmed, calling on the Assembly for swift approval.

Responding to the governor’s address, Speaker Jibril Falgore pledged the assembly’s dedication to facilitating the budget’s swift passage.

“We understand the importance of timely implementation for the benefit of our people, and we will work diligently to ensure the budget is reviewed and passed promptly,” he stated.

The Kano State Assembly will begin budget deliberations in the coming weeks.
