IBADAN – A Non-Governmental Organisation, Channel for Widow Relief Initiative (CFWRI), on Thursday distributed some empowerment items to 25 widows in Ibadan.
The NGO founded by Alhaja Fadilah Balogun distributed the items after the widows completed a three-day programme on poultry farming.
Each of the 25 widows was given 51 day-old chicks as well as feeds, drugs and other poultry materials.
Speaking at the occasion, the Oyo State Commissioner for Transport, Prof. Nuran Tanimowo, said widows needed special care.
He urged well meaning Nigerians to always engage in programmes that would be of benefit to widows and other members of the society.
Tanimowo, who said that government alone could not provide all the needs of the people, advised the beneficiaries to ensure judicious use of the items distributed.
Also speaking, Mrs Yetunde Adegboye, Chairperson, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Oyo State Chapter, said abuse of widows and their children constituted one of the most serious violations of human rights.
Adegboye advised widows and other women to approach FIDA for assistance any time their rights were violated, adding that they have right to life, dignity and personal liberty.
Balogun, on her part, appealed to well meaning Nigerians to come to the assistance of CFWRI, saying the NGO needed support for successful execution of its programmes.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Funmilayo Aluko, commended the NGO over the poultry initiative, saying it would enable them to be self employed.
Aluko gave an assurance that the materials given to them would be used judiciously. (NAN)
