Oluwatoyin Saraki, a Nigerian lawyer, philanthropist, and global health advocate, stands out as one of Africa’s most influential figures in championing maternal and child health, women’s rights, and social justice. As the founder and president of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), her initiatives have impacted countless lives across Nigeria and beyond. Through her compassionate leadership, she has become a mentor and role model for women, youth, and emerging leaders striving to make a difference in their communities.
Without mincing words, I chose to write about her because I find her living such an impactful life and never because she is the wife of a former governor and ex-senate president. I have never met her and may never meet her. The truth is not many women out there who were (or and still) in her position are doing such laudable and memorable things as she is doing. Many will rather spend most of their money on the purchase of gold, diamonds and other expensive apparel instead of changing the lives of others who come in contact with them. So, I love her passion for being there for others.
Early Life and Family Background
According to my small research, Oluwatoyin Saraki was born into the prestigious Ojora royal family of Lagos State on 6 September 1964. Her upbringing in an illustrious and principled family instilled in her the values of integrity, compassion, and service to others. Her father, Adekunle Ojora, was a prominent industrialist, and her mother, Erelu Ojuolape Ojora, a well-respected community leader, ensured their children received a well-rounded education and were deeply connected to their cultural heritage.
Her formative years were marked by exposure to both privilege and the realities of societal inequities. This dual perspective would later shape her commitment to bridging the gap between privilege and access, particularly in healthcare and education.
After completing her secondary education in Lagos, ‘Toyin pursued higher education in the United Kingdom, earning a law degree from the University of London. She was later called to the Nigerian Bar, marking the beginning of a career that would blend her legal expertise with advocacy and philanthropy.
Family Life and Personal Experiences
Obviously, Oluwatoyin Saraki is married to Dr. Bukola Saraki, former Senate President of Nigeria, and they have four children. Her experiences as a mother deeply influenced her decision to champion maternal and child health. She has openly shared her challenges during childbirth, including the loss of a child, which fuelled her passion for improving healthcare systems and ensuring no family experiences such tragedies that she went through due to preventable conditions. Her vulnerability and willingness to speak on such personal topics have endeared her to many and strengthened her role as a relatable and empathetic leader.
The Wellbeing Foundation Africa: A Catalyst for Change
In 2004, Oluwatoyin Saraki founded the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, a nonprofit organisation focused on improving health outcomes for mothers and children. The foundation operates on multiple fronts, including advocacy, policy reform, and grassroots interventions. Its flagship programmes include antenatal and postnatal care, midwifery education, and water sanitation initiatives.
One of her notable contributions is the “MamaCare” programme, which provides pregnant women with free access to skilled midwives, health education, and support networks. The initiative has significantly reduced maternal and infant mortality rates in areas where it operates, aligning with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Through her foundation, ‘Toyin has worked closely with international organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations (UN), and the Global Fund. She serves as a Global Champion for Universal Health Coverage and she is a member of numerous advisory boards, using these platforms to amplify the voices of underserved communities.

With her over two decades of global advocacy covering reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health; ending gender-based discrimination and violence; and improving education, socio-economic empowerment, and community livelihoods globally, she is worth celebrating and being called the noble title as a mentor and role model.
She has also played a significant role in mentoring healthcare professionals, particularly midwives, through the WBFA’s Midwifery Services Scheme. This program not only equips midwives with the skills they need but also empowers them to advocate for systemic reforms in healthcare delivery.
