ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – The Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr Mariya Mahmoud, has described the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) of the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, as “life-saving.”
Mahmoud gave the commendation at the inauguration of the second edition of the scheme in Abuja on Tuesday.
“In the fast-paced world that we live in, it is essential to pause and appreciate the pillars of our community – the elderly.
“Their stories, guidance, and enduring spirits have shaped our collective journey.
“A simple gift can bring a smile, warmth, and a sense of belonging to those who may feel overlooked or lonely, especially during this time of the year.
“The initiative’s mission is not just about distributing material items; it is about fostering a sense of community, compassion, and respect for our elders, youths, girl child and widows,” she said.
She said the theme of the event, “Total Wellness: Happiness, Healthy, and Prosperous Lifestyle”, demonstrated the First Lady’s commitment to ensuring the comfort and well-being of the elderly.
The minister called on critical stakeholders to emulate the good gesture of the First Lady, by ensuring that the love and warmth shared with the elderly and the less privileged resonates throughout the year.
In her remarks, Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary, Women Affairs Secretariat, FCT Administration, said each beneficiary would go home with 200,000 naira and other items.
Benjamins-Laniyi, who is the coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative in the FCT, said that such support would leave the beneficiaries happier, richer, and healthier.
Earlier, Mrs Tinubu had explained that the scheme was designed to support the welfare of elderly citizens, aged 65 and above across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT.
Other beneficiaries, she said, included veterans from the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association.
The high point of the event was the presentation of N200,000 cash each to 250 elderly persons in the FCT, 25-kilogramme bag of rice, wheelchairs, and medical screening among others. (NAN)
