Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has outlined seven significant accomplishments of his administration in 2024, emphasizing progress across various sectors despite security challenges, including Boko Haram’s disruptions in the northern parts of the state.
At a press briefing in Damaturu, Governor Buni reflected on these achievements, which he likened to goals scored in a match. He expressed gratitude to civil servants, traditional rulers, security forces, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the state’s development.
Humanitarian Support
The first notable achievement was in humanitarian aid, where the state government provided ₦3.9 billion in multi-purpose cash assistance to 52,000 households and over 200,000 individuals. Additionally, nearly one million people received food and non-food aid throughout the year.
Agriculture
In the agricultural sector, the administration invested ₦15.3 billion to empower 5,340 farmers. Another ₦1.7 billion was allocated for grain procurement to strengthen strategic reserves. These measures have bolstered food security and supported livelihoods across Yobe.
Healthcare
Governor Buni described healthcare as a standout achievement. The state recruited 311 healthcare workers, improved salary scales, offered free dialysis programs, renovated hospitals, and expanded healthcare schemes. These initiatives earned Yobe a $500,000 prize in the North-East Primary Healthcare Leadership Challenge.
Infrastructure
Infrastructure development also took center stage. The state completed key road projects, including the 76km Gujba-Ngalda road and various urban road networks. Solar-powered boreholes and streetlights were installed in rural and urban areas to enhance access to water and energy.
Education
In education, the administration made strides by recruiting and training teachers, upgrading school infrastructure, and improving student feeding programs. The government also allocated ₦2 billion for tuition and exam fees for secondary school students, addressing challenges in an educationally disadvantaged state.
Economic Empowerment
Buni’s administration introduced economic empowerment programs, including cash grants for entrepreneurs, vocational training for youth, and distribution of tools and equipment. New markets and processing facilities are also under construction to support commerce and industry.
Environmental Protection
Recognizing Yobe’s fragile environment, the government implemented erosion control projects, reforestation initiatives, and distributed solar-powered cooking stoves. These efforts aim to mitigate environmental degradation and promote sustainability.
Governor Buni concluded by promising continued progress in 2025, focusing on consolidating gains and delivering even greater socio-economic development for Yobe State. He expressed optimism about achieving a “goal feast” in the coming year, reflecting his administration’s commitment to transformative governance.
