LAGOS – Mr Idowu Adelakun, Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos State Council, on Friday said that good governance was the only panacea to rapid progress of the Nigerian state.
Adelakun, at the Workers Day celebration in Lagos, said that the survival of any government depended greatly on constructive consultations with stakeholders, especially workers’ unions.
“A good government must make consultations with critical stakeholders a necessity to ensure that their policies and laws are indeed tailored towards alleviating peoples’ sufferings.
“Polices and laws should also be geared toward improving the economy and not be anti-people.
“An all inclusive government , where the interest of everyone is well protected and taken care of, will be the solution to economic revival of this country,’’ he said.

He said the widening gap between the rich and the poor in Nigeria was a minus to forming an inclusive political system and was detrimental to her growth.
Adelakun said that workers played significant roles in the emerging political situation of the country and therefore should enjoy the dividends of the changes across the two top levels of government.
“The hands that produce wealth of the nation and oil the engine of production must be sufficiently compensated.
“Our governments should also remember the pensioners who laboured for this country,’’ he said.
The labour leader urged governments at all levels to provide the basic necessities of life for the people to improve their living standards.
“Governments need to deal with corruption to secure the future of citizens,’’ he said.
According to him, regular training and re-training of all of workers should be of top priority to governments and casualisation of some workers has to stop.
Adelakun said that the union was against the privatisation of any public utility.
“Privatisation by government has shown not to have good consequences to the people.
“Government, workers and all Nigerians have to work to ensure that the country remains a safe place where we will all be proud to live and work.
“The revival of the economy to consolidate for democracy should be the business of all,’’ Adelakun said.
Also, Mr Dare Durosimi, Acting Chairman, Radio Television Theatre and Art Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU), Lagos Council, urged the Federal Government to pay the agitated Media Salary Structure.
“We expect that our government will by now have known the necessity and reason to pay the special media salary we have been asking.
“Our profession has accompanying demands and hazards which ought to be adequately compensated for through our monthly severance package.
“If other workers in the public sector are getting special allowances, we the media personnel need such too,’’ he said.
Durosimi advised all workers to discharge their duties with dedication, efficiency, integrity and abide to their workplace rules and regulations. (NAN)
