LAGOS – A sexagenarian truck driver, Andrew Osilonye, who allegedly knocked down a 41-year-old man with his two legs almost chopped off, was on Wednesday charged before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Osilonye, 64, who lives in Boundary area of Ajegunle, Apapa, a Lagos suburb, is being tried for careless driving.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Micheal Unnah, told the court that the accused committed the offence on July 5, 2011 at about 6.30 p.m. at ENL/PMT exit gate junction at Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Apapa.
Unnah said the accused, who was arrested three years after he committed the offence, allegedly drove his truck carelessly and hit one Charles Ololo and caused him permanent disability.
According to him, Osilonye drove the truck with registration no. XY 332-FST “negligently” and without respect for other road users and knocked down Okolo leaving him with serious injuries in the legs.
The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravenes the Road Traffic Act of Lagos State, 2012.
The accused entered a plea of `not guilty’.
The Senior Magistrate, Mr M. Owumi, admitted the accused to a bail of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He said the sureties should also show an evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.
Further hearing in the case was adjourned to June 6. (NAN)
