DAMATURU – Yobe State Agency for the Control of AIDS (YOSACA), on Thursday commenced voluntary HIV/AIDS screening of 3, 438 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state.
Hajiya Farida Mamudo, Executive Director of the agency, said at the launch of the programme in Damaturu, that the exercise was to prevent the spread of the disease in the IDPs’ camp.
She said that IDPs from Ambiya Tasha, Ambiya Kura, Sharlibri, Bulabulin, Turo and Shangamari communities in Gujba Local Government Area, taking refuge in Damaturu, would be screened.
“We have over 700 women including expectant mothers at the Pompomari Refugee Camp here in Damaturu who are also targeted for the screening to curb mother-to-child transmission of HIV,” she said.

The director also said that the inmates would be sensitised on the mode of transmission and prevention of the virus.
Mamudo said 13 civil society organisations were engaged to promote issues of HIV/AIDS especially on prevention, care and support across the state.
“The agency engaged the organisations to reach every nook and cranny of the state so that the HIV/AIDS prevention campaign would not be obstructed by the security challenges in the state.
“It is gratifying that this effort has recorded huge success and there is no breakage in the campaign chain,” she said. (NAN)
