35 carnival groups perform at 2015 Eko Carnival

LAGOS – A total of 35 carnival groups on Saturday participated in the 2015 edition of Lagos State Carnival at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) on the Island.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the carnival kicked off with the various groups in a procession led by the Eko Samba drummers.

The annual carnival which started in 2010 is aimed at celebrating the state’s cultural heritage and its economic growth.

Mr Adeogun Adeola, the Chief Organiser of carnival, has projected that Saturday’s carnival involving elaborate costumes amid pomp, would generate N1 billion for the state .

NAN also reports that the carnival was shifted following the postponement of the general elections.

The carnival procession passed through the Bourdilon Street through Campus Square and back to TBS.

The groups were clad in colourful attires, while some of the contingents performed synchronised acrobatic feats to the admiration of invited guests.

NAN, however, observed that in spite of the wide publicity given the carnival, the event was poorly attended as many of seats were empty.

The poor attendance, NAN gathered, may have been caused by traffic gridlocks being witnessed in Lagos metropolis as a result of fuel scarcity.

Mr Tajudeen Arobieke, the leader of one of the groups, told NAN that they arrived the venue late from Iyana-Ipaja because of the traffic situation in the metropolis.

Some of dignitaries present at the event include Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka and traditional rulers. (NAN)
