MAIDUGURI – Some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) taking refuge at different camps in Borno due to Boko Haram attacks on Thursday expressed appreciation to Borno Government for providing free meals.
Some of the affected persons told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri that the free meals provided huge relief for them in view of their limited financial capabilities.
Mallam Goni Modu, an IDP at the NYSC orientation camp, said he was overwhelmed by the government’s gesture.
“When we were brought into this camp by the government in May, our main concern was how to get daily meals.
“But we were surprised when we saw a number of women cooking at the kitchen and shortly we were served food,” Modu said.
“The women have been serving us with three daily square meals since we came in. We are really grateful to the state government for this gesture,” he said.
Modu said government had also provided free medical services to the inmates at the camp.
“We are also grateful to the government for setting up a clinic at the camp to take care of our medical needs
“The nurses have been very kind to us. Each time we visit the clinic, they take good care of us,” he said.
Mrs Yagana Shettima, another victim, said: “I left my village in Konduga following an attack in March.
“My husband was killed and our house was razed by the insurgents,” Shettima said.

“ I managed to escape with my two children to the Yarwa Primary School, Maiduguri, where we have been staying before we were evacuated to this camp.
“The condition in the camp has been nice since we have adequate security”.
Shettima commended health officials at the camp for their care and support.
“The doctors gave me free malaria drugs yesterday when I was down; As you can see now, I am getting better. I think they deserve commendation,” she said.
Shettima also thanked the state government for providing free clothing to the IDPs in different camps.
“All the women in the camp were given two wrappers each, while men were given one bundle of guinea brocade each.
“We were also provided with money to sew the clothes,” she said.
Mr Mustapha Ngoshe, an IDP in Mole camp, also thanked the state government for the numerous assistance rendered to them.
“Our problem now is idleness. Since we left our villages, we have been living in the camps doing nothing.
“We are appealing to government to explore avenues to engage some of us as security guards or cleaners in the town pending when we can go back to our villages, he said.”
No fewer than 149, 903 IDPs have so far been registered by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Borno this year.
This followed incessant attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.(NAN)
