FCT Secondary Education Board presents letters of promotion for teachers

ABUJA – Mr Morrof Akinwande, Chairman, FCT, Secondary Education Board, on Tuesday presented 689 promotion letters to school principals to distribute to teachers as promised.

Akinwande said while presenting the letters in Abuja that the teachers should call off their strike in the interest of their students.

He said that all the stakeholders were invited and the three issues involved were discussed and that the board promised to issue the promotion letters on or before May 29.

The chairman said a committee was set up to address the issues of the removal of 27.5 per cent professional allowance of teachers working in offices.

“Yesterday (Monday), the Nigerian Union Teachers (NUT) shut down all public schools in the city, basically on three grounds of non-release of promotion letters to the deserving teachers in our schools.

“Other are the removal of 27.5 per cent professional allowance of the teachers that are working in the offices and upward review of rents of teachers to 100 per cent,’’ he said.

Akinwande said some teachers had abandoned their profession.

The News Agency of Nigerian (NAN) recalls that on Tuesday the Education Secretariat of Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) appealed to striking teachers to end the action in the interest of the country.

The statement said it was regrettable that the teachers embarked on the strike on Monday in spite of the secretariat’s meeting with their union’s leadership on the issue.

It said that the FCTA was dismayed that NUT “wilfully shut down all public primary and secondary schools, including some agencies and departments, under the secretariat.’’

It recalled that the issues of promotion of staff, payment of 100 per cent rent allowances and implementation of 27.5 per cent teaching allowances for teachers, which informed the strike had been discussed.

“ It must be mentioned that the union gave a notice on the strike, two weeks ago.

“A meeting was held between the secretariat and the NUT Executive on May 12 where these three matters were discussed extensively,’’ it said. .(NAN)
