Nasarawa state office of National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has concluded arrangement to conduct on-the-spot testing of bread in all bakeries in Nasarawa state against the use of potassium bromate by master bakers.
Coordinator of NAFDAC in the state, Mr. Michael Attah, disclosed this during a sensitization workshop for master bakers yesterday in Lafia, the state capital.
According to him, the exercise would commence next week and that products of all bakeries in the state must go through the test in order to avert sanctions from NAFDAC.
He enumerated health hazards associated with the use of potassium bromate as bread improver to include cough, Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, kidney failure as well as potential to cause cancer.
The NAFDAC head in the state explained that toxicological studies has also shown that potassium bromate degrades essential vitamins in bread such as vitamin A2, B1, B2 and vitamin E.
He continued that NAFDAC has made available a list of over 20 safe alternative bread improvers to the master bakers.
Attah concluded that the workshop was part of the agency’s annual bread monitoring exercise to remind bakers of basic good hygiene practice requirements and the need for effective compliance with NAFDAC guidelines and procedures.

Chairman of Nasarawa state Master Bakers, Mr. Anthony Obiora, commended NAFDAC for the workshop as it would ensure the production of healthy bread and other bakery products for consumption by the public.
That was even as Obiora charged the master bakers to always adhere to all the food safety standards stipulated by NAFDAC in order to avoid sanctions.
