Ibadan- Mr Mike Aladenika, a presidential candidate for the forthcoming delegate conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has promised to key into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) if elected into office.
Aladeinika, who visited the Oyo State Council of the NUJ on Thursday in Ibadan in continuation of his nationwide campaign tour, described the NHIS as `a desirable policy.’
“Civil servants are enjoying the benefits of NHIS. If I am elected as NUJ president, I will lead Nigerian journalists to key into the scheme,” he promised.
The candidate also promised to tackle quackery in the profession.
He said that under his leadership, membership of the union would be regulated to ensure that only qualified candidates are employed as journalist.
“Apart from that, my administration will organise training and retraining for journalists in order to make them thorough bread professionals,” he said.
Aladenika also pledged to ensure that Media Salary Structure (MSS) are paid to journalists.
He however stated that he did not support picketing media outfit that failed to pay workers, saying, “it is better to find a lasting solution to the problem.”
“I will convey a Media Forum where all the stakeholders will converge to discuss the problems of journalism,” he said.
He said that his administration would sponsor a bill in the National Assembly to ensure that employers do not owe journalists arrears of salaries.
