ABUJA – Some Abuja residents feel that giving out one’s used clothes to others may have negative consequences for the giver.
The residents expressed the feeling in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday on why some find it difficult to dispose of their used clothes.
Some others, however, said that those who did not give out such clothes lacked the spirit of giving.
Mr David Muyiwa, a civil servant said the world was no longer safe and full of wicked people which had made a lot of people to be more careful and appear uncaring.
“There are cases where clothes given out become a problem to the giver. The clothes will be used against them because of hatred and jealousy.
“So it is better in some cases to just keep whatever cloth you have to yourself or burn the ones you feel are no longer useful,’’ he said.
Mrs Grace Akpala, a teacher at Light of Day Nursery and Primary School, said that she usually gave out clothes she did not need any more because some people might need them.
“I see no reason why someone will keep clothes for a year without putting them on or giving them out to those that are in need of them.
“ I see this as lack of love and probably some do not know how to share things with others.
“Ladies do this more; some may feel they have spent a lot on the dress so giving it out will becomes difficult,’’ she said.
Miss Linda Kelvin, a business woman told NAN that some people keep clothes because they cherished them and attached so much importance to such clothes.
“When you have a cloth you so much value, you will find it difficult to give it out even when you no longer use it for the fear of it not being misused.
“And what if you even give it out to the person that doesn’t realise its worth.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean old clothes; you can also give out new ones that you no longer find useful.
“Some people refuse to give out clothes because they think giving it out will be an insult to those they are giving it to.
“Some ladies may just want their wardrobe to be full so, they don’t dispose clothes,’’ she said.
Mr Jones Ojuekaiye, a Secretary said that people that want to give out there clothes could do that in so many places if they do not want to give to individuals.

“You can go to orphanage homes, churches, mosques, hospitals, widows, among others.
“A lot of organisations catering for the less privilege exist and they will be very happy to receive such gifts,’’ he said. (NAN
