(NAN) in Lagos that government should appropriate the impact of science on the country’s economy.
“Science and Technology is another viable path (apart from oil) to national development and economic growth and if well managed, can contribute to the country’s development,’’ he said.
Tomori said that inadequate funding of science and research in the nation’s institutions had limited the growth of research and urged the government to urgently address it.
The NAS president said that the young ones should be encouraged to take up courses in the sciences in the universities to be well grounded in the field.
He said that the importation of infrastructure such as reagents and equipment needed to successfully carry our scientific research and teaching had made research development cumbersome.
Tomori said that with the state of science and research in the country, it was difficult to analyse the achievements of NAS as they were battering their head against a steel wall to move the academy forward.
“The country is turning its back on science and research making it to be backward and this is not good for future generation.
“We really need to teach science and conduct research in Nigeria,’’ he said.
NAN reports that the academy has been operating as a voluntary organisation but collaborating with the government in the growth and development of science and technology. (NAN)
