THE HAGUE – Accountability for sexual and gender-based violence and providing justice to victims of such crimes is an integral aspect of the mandate of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Silvia- Fernandez’de Gurmendi, ICC President, made the statement on Thursday at a roundtable meeting between the Court’s judges and the UN Special Representative for Sexual Violence in Conflict, Ms. Zainab Bangura.
“I am truly delighted for this opportunity to discuss the many synergies between the important work conducted by Ms. Bangura and her office on the one hand and the ICC on the other hand,” she said.
Gurmendi said that ending sexual violence was an important objective for the global community.
She said ICC was committed to working with the United Nations and other relevant actors to put an end to sexual and gender-based violence.
In her remark, Bangura described the ICC as `a vital tool in the fight against sexual violence.’
She stressed the need for her office to engage with the Court to discuss the challenges confronting both parties.
“This includes victims, witness protection, and reparations.
