Adamawa assembly amends state varsity’s law over retirement age

YOLA – The Adamawa State House of Assembly has begun the amendment of the Adamawa State University Law 2001, to  comply with the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) guidelines on retirement age.

The bill, which is specifically on the retirement age of academic and non-academic staff and tenure of the its registrar, passed its second reading at the house plenary on Monday.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr Kwamoti Laori (PDP-Numan) who presided over the sitting, directed that the bill be referred to the House Standing Committee on Education to further study it and submit its report within two weeks.

NAN reports  that the NUC guidelines approved by the Federal Government in 2012 raised the retirement age of  university professors from 65 years to 70 years while that of non-academic staff was raised from 60 years  to 65 years.

The guideline also limited the tenure of principal officers in the universities to a single term of five years. (NAN)
