Abuja (Sundiata Post) — Late Isiaka Adeleke, a senator, who represented the Osun West Senatorial District, was said to have died, after taking an overdose of drugs.

Adeleke had been rushed to Biket Hospital, Osogbo, Osun, after suffering heart attack, where he later died in the hospital in the early hours of Sunday.

But his lifeless body was returned to LAUTECH Hospital, Osogbo, for an autopsy, on Sunday, after his sudden death at the hospital.

It was earlier reported that he had died of cardiac arrest.

His family members and political associates received the news with shock.

But the indigenes of his home town, Ede, insisted that they wanted to know the cause of his death on the assumption that his death was not natural.

Most of them had insinuated that Adeleke, who was nicknamed ‘Serubawon’ for his grassroots politics, was poisoned.

His burial was fixed for Sunday, but there were reports that Adedeji, his younger brother and father of Davido, Nigerian music star, directed that an autopsy should be conducted before the burial.

According to Sahara Reporters, the politician did not die of poisoning, but as a result of an overdose of painkillers intravenously administered on him.

The online media tweeted, “FLASH: Senator Isiaka Adeleke died as a result of an overdose of painkillers intravenously administered on him, according to pathologists”.

Reports had it that the lawmaker, in his lifetime, suffered from pains in one of his legs.

As a result of this, Adeleke regularly used painkilling injections.

“This had been going on for a while. However, an overdose of the injection led to the heart attack that eventually claimed his life,” TheCable quoted a family source.

TheCable also reported that the man, who administered the drug to Adeleke, is suspected to be a quack.

He has since been arrested and investigations are ongoing.

The family of the deceased is expected to address the press on the latest development.

There had been reports that the deceased was killed because of his interest in the 2018 governorship election in Osun.

Hours, after he died, aggrieved youth attacked journalists, who visited his residence.

The violence continued on Monday, as youths threatened to bar officials of the Osun State government from the burial.

It took the intervention of the police before Idiat Babalola, a senior special adviser to Rauf Aregbesola, Governor of Osun State, was rescued, after a mob had descended on her at Adeleke’s residence.

Adeleke was the first civilian governor of Osun.
