ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – President Goodluck Jonathan has described the election of Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina as the new President of African Development Bank (AfDB) as a good parting gift as his (Jonathan’s) tenure as Nigeria’s president ends.
He has also formally dissolved the Federal Executive Council (FEC) Thursday night.
The brief ceremony which included a toast to the President led by former Minister of Special Duties, Taminu Turaki at the meeting room of the Council Chambers, had the ministers saying “Country man you have done us proud”, amidst laughter and back slapping.
Jonathan said this at the presidential inauguration dinner in honour of President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo at the Banquet hall of the Presidential Villa.
The inaugural dinner was witnessed by the country’s past leaders, African presidents, members of the international community, members of the diplomatic corps, members of the National Assembly, political big wigs, captains of industry among others.
Jonathan, who noted that Nigeria though being the greatest contributor to the AfDB had failed to be elected president in the last three attempts, thanked African leaders for their support and giving him a good parting gift.
He again reiterated his gratitude to God and the people of Nigeria for giving him the opportunity to serve first as deputy governor and then as President of the federal republic.
He said himself, his wife and family members as well as members of his cabinet remained grateful.
Jonathan again reassured Buhari of his best wishes, noting that Buhari was no stranger to national service, having been a head of state before.
He said Buhari’s credentials as a patriot goes ahead of him and expressed confidence that he would unify the country to remain a country where religion or ethnicity is not a barrier.

He called on the international community to give Buhari all the support he would need to succeed.
He said regardless of the outcome of the 2015 elections we should remember we all come from the same family, Nigeria.
