“Indoor air pollution is the presence of contaminants in the house that carry a certain degree of human health risk.
“Poor indoor air can contribute to infections like lung cancer, asthma, headache, dry eyes, and fatigue, among others.
“It can also affect structural degradation and building failure,’ she said.
Raji said that said that biological, random and combustive air pollutants could be caused by bacteria, viruses, radioactive gas, and cigarette smoke.
“We have biological air pollutants, which are caused by viruses; random air pollutants, which are caused by radioactive gas and combustive air pollutants, which results from kerosene, fire places and cigarette smoke.
“They can cause infections, allergies, ulcer and other such health hazards.
“The most dangerous are odourless and colourless gas like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide, which interferes with the delivery of oxygen.
“Residents are advised to imbibe the habit of air cleaning through the use of disinfectants. It is also advisable to increase
ventilation in residential and business premises,’’ Raji said. (NAN)
