ABUJA – The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) on Friday in Abuja said it had rescheduled for a later date the 2014 All-Nigeria Relays, earlier scheduled for March 14.
The AFN Secretary-General, Olumide Bamiduro, who disclosed this in a letter to all of the federation’s affiliates, said the event would now hold between April and June.
The relays were earlier scheduled for March 1 in Ijebu-Ode, but later moved to March 14 at the same venue.
“The All Nigeria Relays has been rescheduled to hold at a future date, in between the period of the Golden League when the athletics season will be at its peak,’’ the AFN secretary-general said.
The 2014’s First AFN Golden League has been scheduled for April 12 in Sagamu, while the Fifth AFN Golden League is scheduled for June 7 in Port Harcourt.
The other three editions have been scheduled for April 26 in Benin, May 10 in Ilorin and May 24 in Akure.
Bamiduro explained that the postponement was because the federation’s Technical Committee considered it expedient to shift the competition in order to make it worth its while.
“It has been considered that the former time we picked is not likely to help AFN achieve its desire of making our relay teams hit fast times which can help them qualify the country for planned world-class competitions ahead.
“This is because the event will be coming at the beginning of the season, and this will not be right,’’ he said.
The AFN secretary-general said the federation would later on pick a date for the event.(NAN)
