ABUJA – Amb. Tom Amolo, the Kenyan Ambassador to Nigeria said on Thursday that Africa was capable of assessing itself on the progress made in the areas of good governance and economic development.
Amolo said this in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“Africans should be left alone to deal with their own problems on their own because they understand these problems better”, he said.
He said that with the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), an important socio-economic development programme of the African Union (AU), member states had been able to evaluate each other’s quality of governance.
Amolo said the purpose of the voluntary self-monitoring mechanism was to promote and re-enforce high standards of governance in African states.

The APRM stipulates that policies and practices of participating countries conform to the agreed values in democracy and political governance, economic governance, corporate governance and socio-economic development.
“With this programme on ground, African countries are able to review themselves and assess progress being made towards achieving good governance,’’ Amolo told NAN.
He said instead of trying African leaders in the International Criminal Court (ICC), they should be tried by the judicial structure established by regional blocs in Africa such as ECOWAS Court of Justice.
He said that though the ICC had dropped the case against Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, there were still charges against the Deputy President, William Ruto.
Amolo said he was confident that the charges against Ruto would also be dropped as no evidence had been brought before the court.
“The Kenyan government would like the cases to be dropped completely so that the Kenyan people will focus on their destiny and development,’’ the envoy said. (NAN)
