LIMA (PERU) – African ministers of environment are expected to give political momentum to negotiations of technical experts from their countries as the ministerial dialogue which opened on Tuesday in Lima, Peru.
The first week of the 12-day 20th Conference of Parties (COP 20) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), was on proposals and clarifications.
The second week will be on dialogue.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ministers will attend series of dialogue as part of the activities at COP 20 for the next three days.
NAN, however, learnt that the African Ministerial Conference on Environment (AMCEN) secretariat hosted African ministers on Dec. 7 to brief them on progress of the negotiations.
With the briefing, they (ministers) are now in better position to participate at the ministerial dialogue on Climate finance and that of dialogue on the Durban platform and high delegation meetings.
NAN reports the forum will create an opportunity for the ministers to provide strategic direction to set the foundations for the 2015 agreement and accelerate action.
Ban-ki Moon, the UN Secretary-General is expected to attend the second half of the Lima talks along with more than 100 ministers, including the Nigeria Minister of Environment, Mrs Lawrencia Mallam.(NAN)
