Katsina – The Katsina State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has commenced the evacuation of refuse in drainages to avert flood disaster during rainy season.
The agency is also conducting similar exercise in Daura, Malunfashi, Funtua, Dustin-ma, Mani, Bakori and Jibia.
The Executive Director of the agency, Alhajii Isah Barda, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Katsina on Monday.
Barda said that the agency embarked on this exercise to avert flooding during the rainy season.
“Rainy season has commenced and we have recorded about five heavy rains that has shown some signs to us that if nothing is done the state will experience flood disaster.
“We observed that our gutters and drainages have a lot of waste that if not evaluated there will be no smooth flow of water during the rainy season.
“We have deployed about 20 tippers that goes round Katsina to evaluate the refuse to outskirts of the town and two tippers each to the seven urban centres to conduct similar exercise,” he said.
The director said that they had an agreement with some youth clubs that assist in removing the waste from gutters in their areas.
“Some non-governmental organisations also provide assistance in the evacuation of the refuse in the gutters and refuse is taken out of the town.”
Barda appealed to the citizens to stop dumping waste products in the gutters and drainages to avoid making the exercise a futile job. (NAN)
