LAGOS (Sundiata Post) – The Auditor-General for the Federation, Mr Shaakaa Chira, has urged auditors to forge a stronger institutional framework to restore the public’s dwindling trust in governance.
Chira made the call at the 54th Bi-Annual Conference of the Body of Federal and States Auditors-General, on Wednesday in Lagos.
The conference had the theme: “Nigerian Accountability Ecosystem: Leveraging on Performance Audit for Effective Governance and Transparency”.
He also emphasised the need for auditors to harness the power of technology to enhance audit outcomes, invest in training, and foster interagency collaboration.
According to him, in doing so, it will not only improve audit outcomes, but also restore public resource in governance
He reaffirmed commitment to working closely with auditors-general across the state and local governments to advance common goals.
“When we are strong together, our shared ambition of an entrepreneurial future is realistic.
‘’We will persevere with professionalism, integrity, and our resolve to achieve results,” Chira said.
The auditor-general stressed that auditors must serve as a watchdog of public resources, providing independent assurance to the people, and representing the legislature.
Lagos State Auditor-General, Dr Muyiwa Adetola, noted that the theme of the conference aligned with the state’s vision for the auditing profession, which emphasised transparency, accountability, and good governance.
Adetola said that good auditing was a force for good governance, transparency, and integrity.
“A force for good is a call to action for every auditor-general to work together in promoting transparency, accountability, and integrity, ” he said.
In his remarks, the Lagos State Head of Service, Mr Olabide Agoro, urged auditors not to see themselves as the policeman of the system, but as partners in progress with all the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies that they worked with.
Agoro was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Service, Mrs Olasunkanmi Oyegbola.
He said: “Auditors should ensure that the discipline of quality, integrity, and accountability in the public service is promoted.
