AIBA urges India Olympic Association to recognise Boxing India

LAGOS – C K Wu, President of the International Boxing Association (AIBA), on Tuesday urged the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to accept Boxing India’s (BI) application for National Federation recognition.
According to Inside “Gamez”, an online portal for sporting news, Wu said that IOA must comply with the Olympic Charter and reverse its decision to reject BI recognition.
It noted that the IOA reached a unanimous decision on the matter at its Annual General Meeting on Dec. 20.
India Olympic association recognises Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) instead of Boxing India.
AIBA said that boxing in India was now disorganised.
“One body was recognised by its parent international body, while the other has the backing of the nation’s apex sports body.
“This leaves India at risk of a resumption of a ban from international events, lifted in Feb. 2013 following long-running dispute between AIBA and the IABF,’’ the publication said.
Wu claimed that the decision was short Article 29 of the Olympic Charter.
It stressed that a national federation must exercise a specific, real and ongoing sports activity, be affiliated to an International Federation (IF).
It also stated that such body must be recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and be governed in all aspects with both the Olympic Charter and the rules of its IF.
According to the report, Wu, who is a member of the IOC’s ruling Executive Board, said that he had a discussion with IOA President, N. Ramachandran, during a recent IOC session.
“The NOC has nothing to do with the recognition of the National Federation.
“It is up to the IF to recognise the National Federation; it is not for government to recognise it,” Wu said.
He confirmed that AIBA had responded to the IOA’s decision to back IABF instead of BI.
“Nobody can argue against the Olympic Charter because everybody follows that,” he said. (NAN)
