LAGOS – The Ajeromi General Hospital in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos state recorded 882 births in 2014, Dr Olufemi Orebanjo, the hospital’s Medical Director, has said.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]
Orebanjo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday that it was an improvement over the previous years’ records.
He said that out of the 882 births, 397 were through caesarian section while 73 were through obstetric

“The number of deliveries has increased since the inauguration of the ultra-modern Maternal and Child Centre (MCC) in the hospital in July, 2011.
“This facility, in 2011 performed 254 deliveries inclusive of 94 caesarean sections and 31 gynaecological surgeries, and since then we have had significant increase.
“Our Maternal and Child Care Centres is a 100-bed specially designed hospital for women and children and has been providing additional referral facilities for functional primary health clinics in the area.
“Our efforts with the support of the state government through the provision of needed equipment and infrastructure contributed to our being able to manage the increasing number of births,” he said.
However, Orebanjo identified power supply, shortage of medical personnel and limited facilities as some of the challenges facing the hospital.
He said that the hospital required more space for expansion of its facilities.
“Our staff strength as at December 2014 was 327 and they are not enough to cope with the high number of patients that visit the hospital.
“Over 545 patients visit the hospital on daily basis. We need more doctors, pharmacists, nurses, laboratory scientists and hospital attendants.
“We also need to replace our generating set, because it is very old and can no longer supply power to all the departments in the hospital,” he said.
Orebanjo, therefore, urged the state government to address the challenges of the hospital to improve healthcare delivery service in the area. (NAN)
