Akande says continuity is critical to ensure credibility in legislature

ABUJA – The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Mrs Mulikat Akande, on Monday in Abuja said that continuity was critical to ensuring stability in the country`s legislature.

She said this while speaking with newsmen shortly after picking the PDP nomination and expression of interest form at the party national headquarters to re-contest her position in the 2015 election.

“As you know, the PDP is now selling forms to those who are interested in contesting in line with the electoral process.

“And for me to be here, It means I am interested in contesting for a seat in the House of Representatives,’’ she said.

According to her, continuity is important to maintain stability and the growth of the country`s legislature.

“For the legislature to grow, we need people who have experience, so if people come for one term and they leave, the people coming in will have to go under tutelage,’’ Akande said.

According to her, so long as an aspirant has the backing of his or her people, he or she can contest the position for as long as he or she wants.

“It depends on the people because it is a mandate, if the people gives it to you, then you should go ahead and represent them,’’ she said.

She expressed optimism that PDP would reclaim most states in the south west in the 2015 general elections following the mass defection of members of the opposition to the party.

“As you can see, we won in Ekiti and that means all the members will be coming from PDP this time around.

“In Oyo state, we don’t have a governor, but we have five members there and the number is going to double now.

“Gov. Mimiko of Ondo state has joined the PDP; all the seven legislators from that state will now join PDP. The so- called losses are now gains for us,’’ she explained.

Mulikat said that she had the ability to floor any aspirant that may be interested in contesting the position with her. [eap_ad_1] “I will still want to be the leader of the House of Representatives if the position is zoned to the south west in 2015.’’

She said her ambition to return to the House of Representatives for a third term was based on the experience she had gathered during the previous sessions.

According to her, this will enable her to represent her people better.

Meanwhile, a support group from Niger, the Ever Green Association, led by Alhaji Abubakar Suleiman, was at the PDP headquarters to pick expression of interest and nomination forms for Alhaji Umar Nasko.

Nasko is contesting the state governorship position in the forthcoming 2015 general elections.

The PDP primaries for the National Assembly will hold on Nov. 22, the governorship will hold on Nov. 29, while the presidency will hold on Dec. 6. (NAN)
