UYO – Akwa Ibom State Head of Service (HOS), Mrs Cecilia Udoessien, on Friday in Uyo, promised to impose sanction on absentee workers and those who turn offices into market places. Udoessien said this in a circular issued by her office and made available to newsmen. She said that government would invoke the civil service rules against any erring worker in the state. Udoessien said that government was disappointed at the rate some workers in the state absent themselves from work. She said that the few others found at their duty posts expend their energy loitering about. She said that it was also pathetic that few people who were in the office just sit around gossiping or engage in petty trading rather than facing their work. “Akwa Ibom State Government will no longer put up with indolent workers. “The rate at which workers in civil service abandon their duty posts daily on very flimsy excuses to attend to their private matters is alarming. “The state cannot continue in this manner. We have to strengthen our civil service if we want to take advantage of investment by foreign partners,” she said.

The head of service regretted that in spite of the earlier warnings to workers, the trend had continued unabated. She said that government would henceforth take strong disciplinary actions to save the cherished public service from total collapse. Udoessien directed permanent secretaries and heads of extra ministerial departments to ensure that the workers under them report for duty on time as well as remain on their duty posts. She said that any worker who had cause to leave office during official working hours must obtain permission from their heads of departments and sign staff movement register. (NAN)
