Abuja (Sundiata Post) – Dr Tony Nwoye, the Senator-elect for Anambra North zone and Hon. Afam Ogene, House of Representatives member-elect for Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Anambra state, have condemned the brutal killing of some staff of the American Embassy and their security details in Ogbaru LGA in Anambra State.
The lawmakers sent their condolences to the American Embassy, the Nigeria Police and the individual families of the victims.
According to police report, the yet to be identified gunmen murdered two officers of the Police Mobile Force and two staff of the American Consulate, and set their bodies ablaze, alongside their vehicles, on Tuesday, May 15, 2023, at the Amiyi/Eke Ochuche communities in Ogbaru Local Government Area of the State.
The two legislators, Dr Nwoye and Hon. Ogene, under whose constituency the dastardly act took place, said they were shocked and saddened by the needless and horrendous killing of the victims, who ordinarily were visitors to Ogbaru, ostensibly for some work of charity.
Nwoye and Ogene, both Labour Party’s Senator-elect and Reps-Elect respectively, in a joint statement in Awka, the Anambra State capital, on Wednesday, May 16, 2023, decried the increasing rate of insecurity and inexplicable violence in Anambra state, with the avoidable human, material and image collateral damage to the state.
According to them, Government(at both Federal and State levels) and security agencies, must rise up to the responsibility of securing the lives and property of the people and by so doing provide an enabling environment of peace, in order to reassure the people – both residents and visitors alike – that they are safe to go about their lawful businesses without harm or threat to life in any part of Anambra state.
The statement said further:”It is sad that this kind of heinous acts would be allowed to continue almost unabated, in a governed environment, leaving people in perpetual fear and despondency.
“Government must adopt a multi-dimensional approach to resolving this security quagmire in the South East and in Nigeria as a whole.
“Anambra North, and Ogbaru in particular, are populated by peace loving people, who go about their agrarian lifestyle and other economic endeavours in lawful contentment, without blood letting. We, therefore, call on government and security agencies to help fish out these criminal elements.
“Nigeria and our constituents deserve better. Their rights to life remain sacrosanct and must be protected by government. Every single life is important and should not be allowed to be snuffed out in such a horrendous manner,” the statement added.
