AWKA – The Anambra Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has expressed its readiness for schools’ resumption on Sept. 22, on the condition that government provided Ebola screening devices in schools.
The State Chairman of the union, Mr Ifeanyi Ofodile, gave the condition in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Saturday after a meeting of the union.
Ofodile, however, said that the devices, including Ebola infrared thermometer kits must be made available to the schools within the week of resumption.
“Having assessed the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) situation in the state, the union is not in any way against President Goodluck Jonathan’s wish that schools should resume on Monday. He commended Gov. Willie Obiano for setting up a rapid response team as well as ensuring the training of 1,043 teachers selected from all the schools in the state on Ebola prevention and control.
Also speaking, the state President of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), Mr Geoffrey Ajiba, expressed the readiness of the members to commence academic activities on Sept. 22.
“We were told that by Sept. 22, schools should resume, we have been told what to do with little things like frequent hand washing.
“We pray that the government will keep to their promise because the lives of the children are at stake,” he said.
Similarly, Mr Ikenna Achukwu, the State Chairman, Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria, said that some public schools had not been provided with borehole or water reservoirs.
He advised parents to train their children on proper hygiene and also assist in providing some of the materials such as wash hand basins, hand sanitizers and towels.
“We will resume schools on Sept. 22 with the hope that government will play its part,” he said. (NAN)
