Onitsha (Anambra) – The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra has hailed the appointment of the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee, urging it to ensure unity and justice among members.
The Secretary of the Ejike Oguebego faction of the PDP in the state, Mr Chuks Okoye, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Onitsha on Monday.
Okoye said the appointment of the committee in Port Harcourt saved the party from disintegration, as different factions of the party were ready to pull out had the convention held.
The secretary said the committee had the opportunity to reconcile warring factions and make the party formidable again.
He described members of the committee as people with integrity, who would not cut corners in the discharge of their responsibilities, especially the secretary, Sen. Ben Ndi-Obi, known for his impeccable character.
Okoye urged them to pay particular attention to the Anambra PDP, where gross injustice had been perpetrated for long.
“What we are suffering in Anambra is a case where somebody wants to bend the rule, but we believe that the committee will look at the issue dispassionately and call a spade a spade no matter whose ox is gored.”
Okoye urged the chairman of the PDP caretaker committee to call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue certificate of return to candidates who were produced by the Oguebego-led state executive of the party.
He said that those candidates were recognised by the several court judgments, saying that it was injustice to have denied them certificate of return.
“The national caretaker committee should not delay but should be poised to do things right,” he said, arguing that it was one way to bring back justice and confidence to the party in the state.
Okoye said it was the intention of the party in the state to instill discipline among members and carry everybody along.
According to him, the state working committee of the PDP led by Oguebego has approved the appointment of mobilisation and reconciliation committees, to ensure that the party recovers its lost glory and becomes united.
He debunked the allegation that the Oguebego-led PDP was working for Chief Chris Uba with a view to actualise his governorship ambition in 2018, describing it as “fallacy of equivocation.”
“It is unfounded and cannot be substantiated. Chris Uba is a resource person who has worked tirelessly to improve the fortunes of the party in the state.
“Under his watch between 2006 and 2007, PDP won three senatorial, 11 House of Representatives and 30 House of Assembly seats.
“The issue of governorship of Anambra State is not being discussed; what is important is to galvanise the party into a winning team,” he said. (NAN)
