Awka – A chairmanship candidate for the Anambra Football Association, Olisa Aniuno, has urged the Nigerian Football Federation to set standards for the quality of coaches it wishes to hire.
Reacting to Sunday Oliseh’s resignation and appointment of Samson Siasia as a stop-gap Super Eagles coach, Aniuno told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday that such standards should be for all the national teams.
He said that the turnover of coaches in the Super Eagles was not good for the team’s stability, especially as the struggle to qualify for the World Cup continued.
He described Oliseh’s resignation as shocking but acceptable as his best was not good enough.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
He urged the federation to evolve a more stringent employment policy to engender discipline and results for all the parties.
Aniuno added that the policy should also eliminate the situation that could result in such unplanned termination of contracts.
“Well, the cards were already stacked against Oliseh; a lot of people really opposed his selection as coach and that negative mindset never died down. It followed him till the end.
“Oliseh did his best but Nigerians needed more. We have to be willing to get a coach who can build our team for sustainability, and he must be given the opportunity to rebuild the team.
“If you want a very good coach, the NFF must be ready to spend the type of money that will attract such a coach,’’ he said.
Aniuno lauded the federation for the speedy replacement with Siasia and his assistants, Emmanuel Amuneke, Alloy Agu and Salisu Yusuf, to lead the team in the match against Egypt.
“Our local coaches are good options for substantive replacement and that is if the criteria is based strictly on merit and national interest,’’ he said. (NAN)
