LAGOS – The Association of National Olympic Committee of Africa (ANOCA), on Tuesday described the late Alpha Diallo, a former President of the National Olympic Committee of Guinea as a strong advocate for African youth and sports.
A statement by ANOCA President, Lassana Palenfo, said that Diallo, who died aged 82, was a member of the association and would be remembered as one of the stalwarts of the international sports movement.
The statement added that Diallo’s tireless fight and passion for promoting Olympic ideals would remain a source of enduring inspiration in the history of the African Sports Movement. [eap_ad_2] “It is with deep sadness and great sense of loss that ANOCA learned of the death of Alpha Diallo.
“On this sad occasion, let me on behalf of ANOCA executive board and the entire Africa express condolences to the National Olympic Committee of Guinea, most especially to the bereaved family.
“Our prayer is that God Almighty would grant them the necessary comfort during this trying time,’’ the statement said.
Diallo, whose cause of death has not been revealed, joined the IOC in 1994 and served as a member of the Executive Board from 2003 to 2006.
His sports administration career also saw him leading Guinea’s National Olympic Committee for 15 years.
He served as a member of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa Executive Committee from 1986 to 1990.
Diallo later became the President from 2001 to 2005.
In addition, he was an Association of National Olympic Committees Executive Committee member and vice-president.
He was also Guinea’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in New York from 1983 to 1985. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
