Abuja – Chief Benneth Lemchi, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC), has advised the Federal Government to focus on massive construction of more silos to ensure effective food storage.
Lemchi, a former gubernatorial candidate in Imo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja that effective storage was required to enhance food security in the country.
According to him, the biting effects of the current economic recession will ease off if many foods are made available all year round.
He said that the only way to guarantee food security was through proper planning for the future to avert mass hunger.
“Failure to prepare is preparing to fail; we must start now to store food for even our unborn generation.
“All hands must be on deck to tackle food scarcity by producing massively and storing for the famine day.
“The era of seasonal plenty must be over with better planning,’’ Lemchi said.
The party chieftain also urged the three tiers of government to formulate policies that would stimulate massive food production, supply as well as effective storage.
He said many countries with little or no agricultural expertise had steady food supply because they had effective policies in place.
According to him, the reason for the high cost of food items like palm oil and groundnuts among others in the market is because of lack of effective storage.
He said it was high time that government rose above food insecurity by evolving effective strategy to combat the problem.
