JOS – Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos, Plateau, has urged Nigerian leaders to be sincere and honest in tackling insurgency affecting some northern states.
Kaigama, who is also the President, Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), made the statement on Wednesday in Jos in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
He described terrorism as `a negative manifestation of the ills of the Nigerian state,’ adding that terrorism would always rear its ugly face due to “some underlining but multidimensional factors.’’
“Nigerians are too aesthetic in everything they do. We concentrate so much on doing the outward things, but seemingly forget to dig deeper to find lasting solutions to our problems.

“Leaders in this country — political, religious, and traditional must be sincere and honest in their dealings to bring an end to insurgency,” he said.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]

The cleric noted that though majority of Nigerians claim they are religious, the fear of God could rarely be found in their dealings.

He urged public office holders and Nigerians in general to be patriotic, adding that patriotism would help to ameliorate the incessant security challenges affecting the country.
Kaigama said the federal government had not been able to effectively deal with terrorism because majority of Nigerians were divided on ethnic, religious, political and social lines.
“If I travel to other countries, I feel their citizens’ high sense of patriotism. You see people who are ready to die for the sanctity and sanity of their country, but in Nigeria, the case is always different,” he said. (NAN)
