Armed security operatives surrounded the main palace of the Kano Emir at Kofar Kudu early Friday morning, blocking people from entering or leaving the premises.
The increased security presence coincides with a planned event where Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II was scheduled to escort Alhaji Munir Sanusi, the newly-appointed Wamban Kano, to his district posting in Bichi.
Bichi is one of the four emirates created by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, which were later dissolved by the current Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Sources confirmed that the Bichi Emir’s Palace is also under heavy security, with armed police officers stationed in the area.
The reasons for the tight security remain unknown as of now. Efforts to contact Abdullahi Haruna, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Police Command, were unsuccessful as his phone was unreachable.
Traditional rulers and titleholders were stranded at the Kano Emir’s palace due to the security lockdown. Many had to abandon their vehicles inside the palace and walk to the central mosque for Friday prayers.
A source revealed that the Emir remains inside the palace while most visitors left to attend Friday prayers. Armed personnel continue to monitor the area, restricting human and vehicular movements.
