ADO-EKITI – Armed soldiers and mobile policemen have tightened security at the premises of the Ekiti State Judiciary headquarters, the News agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Also heavily guarded is the major entrance to the Government House in Ado-Ekiti.
The High Court, Magistrates Court and the Court of Appeal are located at the premises of the Ekiti State Judiciary headquarters.
A NAN correspondent, who visited the complex, reports that the additional security personnel arrived at the court premises on Wednesday morning and took positions at strategic locations.
The armed men who came in several pick-up vans were supported by stand-by armoured tanks.
ASP Victor Babayemi, the Public Relations Officer of State Police Command, confirmed the development, saying the soldiers and policemen were drafted on the orders of “the highest authorities’’.
“This is in consonance with last week’s resolution of the National Judicial Council which ordered that the IGP should provide adequate security for Ekiti courts.’’
He said the command got information that some group of people were planning another round of violent protest “which must be nipped in the bud’’.
The Chief Judge of state, Justice Ayo Daramola, who ordered closure of all courts in the state as a result of violence, has yet to order a reopening.
Members of the state chapter of the Judiciary Workers Union of Nigeria are currently on strike following the industrial action declared by state workers last week over non-payment of salaries. (NAN)
