JOS (SUNDIATA POST)- The 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Rukuba, near Jos, has organised a training for serving, retired personnel, and their family members on fish farming.
Speaking at the event on Thursday in Jos, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the division, said that the exercise aimed at ensuring a better life before and after retirement.
He said that the empowerment programme was in line with the Chief of Army’s (COAS) command philosophy, aimed at improving the welfare of personnel and their families.
Abubakar also explained that the training was in collaboration with the Samadeco Nigeria Ltd, popularly known as “Dr Fish”.
He explained that exercise would enable the beneficiaries to navigate through the current economic realities through fish farming.
“This training is not only timely, but essential as it aligns with the drive of the COAS, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oloyede, to improve the welfare of personnel and their families.
“It is also aimed at enriching serving and retired, and members of the barrack community in general to respond to the reality of our economic landscape.
“This is because our earnings alone are no longer enough.
“The knowledge from this training will improve the income of households and thereby improve our operational efficiency in the field,” he said
The GOC thanked Dr Samuel Adetunji, the Chief Executive Officer of Samadeco Nigeria Ltd for accepting to provide fingerlings and other starter packs for the 200 beneficiaries.
Speaking at the event, Dr Hafiz Ogun, the Director General of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), commended the GOC for organising the training.
Ogun said that the gesture would elicit better performance by the personnel of the Nigerian Army, toward ensuring the safety of lives and property.
The director general disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has approved a skill development initiative for military personnel and their family members.
Dr Hosea Finangwe, the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Plateau University, Bokkos, called on officers and men of the armed forces to embrace farming as a means of earning.
Finangwe, who is one of the resource persons at the training, said that the move would not only improve their personal income, but would also promote the green revolution of the Federal Government. (NAN)
