Nsukka (Enugu State)- Six people were killed while four others sustained injuries on Sunday when an articulated vehicle crashed into a drinking/football viewing centre near Obollo Afor in Udenu Local Government, Enugu State.
The accident occurred around 2.30 p.m. at Umusigide Obollo Etiti in the same local government.
The articulated vehicle belonging to a construction company was said to be conveying materials to Obollo-Etiti.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the vehicle skidded off the road due to burst front tyre and ran into the centre.
One of the survivors, Mr Ifeanyi Odoh, who is the owner of the joint, told NAN on Tuesday that they were in the joint when the trailer crashed into it.
“It is unfortunate that one can be inside his business place and experience this type of fatal accident.
“I am yet to recover from the shock of what happened on Sunday where some of my customers died.
“Six of my customers died while four others sustained various degrees of injuries,’’ Odoh, who sustained injuries to the leg, said.
Another survivor, Mr Timothy Odoh, said he was in the joint, sitting on the same table with two people who lost their lives.
“It is like a dream to me how I survived the accident. I thank God who saved my life that Sunday,’’ he said.
Efforts to get comments from the Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Obollo-Afor Unit, Mr Josheph Eze, proved abortive as he was said to have traveled to Enugu for a meeting.
He was unable to pick calls put across to him by the NAN correspondent.
When contacted, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, the spokesman of the Enugu State Police Command, confirmed the accident but said that only four and not six people died while two others sustained injury.
“I am aware of the accident, which occurred on Sunday in which four people died and two sustained injury when vehicle belonging to a construction company crashed into a viewing/drinking joint,’’ he said. (NAN)
