LAGOS – Pius Asaba, a board member of the Africa Amputee Football Federation (AFFA), has advised the Nigeria Amputee Football Federation (NAFF) to initiate a league, to enhance the development of the sport.
Asaba told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday that the sport was yet to get the required awareness needed to further develop it in the country.
“Amputee football is a budding sport in Nigeria and must be given every attention and measures by the administrators in charge to aid its development.
“Some people just have the idea that we have amputee footballers but there has not been any medium for the players to showcase their talents.
“They should introduce league matches among the States that have amputee footballers and throw it open to attract spectators, so that football fans will see another angle of soccer,’’ he said.
Asaba said that with the introduction of the programmes, the development of the sport would take a new dimension, as other state associations would follow suit.
According to him, some amputee footballers in other states were wasting away as a result of lack of recognition by the appropriate authorities, stressing that such programmes would alert them.
“NAFF as the national body, should set the pace for state associations to follow; there is no state in Nigeria that football is not making waves but only that of the able bodied.
“The amputated footballers should also be given same opportunity so that they can develop their talents and contribute their quota to football development,’’ he said.
Asaba, however, recommended that the step should be given prompt and effective attention by NAFF in 2015, adding that the nation was blessed with talents in amputee football. (NAN)
