Abuja – The Rivers State team on Friday won the women’s doubles event of the ongoing 12th edition of the Aso Table Tennis National Championship in Abuja for the third time.
In the event’s final match, the pair of Halimat Hussain and Funmi Ajala defeated the pair of Ajoke Ojomu and Onyinyechi Mba of FCT 11- 8, 11-4, 4-11 and 11-2.
In the third-place match, the pair of Esther Oribamise and Folarin Oguntale of Ekiti defeated Amina Fashola and Bose Oduseye of Rivers and Katsina states respectively 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-2.
In the men’s doubles, Kazeem Makanjuola and Omotayo Olajide beat Ajetunmobi Segun and Adeyinka Hammed 3-1 to win the event.
Onaolapo Ojo and Fagbamila Wale beat Akanbi Lasisi and Hassan Nurudeen 3-0 to win the event’s third-place match.
In the cadet boys’ singles category, Ayanwale J. of Lagos state defeated Animashaun A. of Ekiti 3-1 to become champion.
Obayomi of Lagos defeated Animashaun 3-1 to win the third-place match.
Meanwhile, in post-match interviews, Hussain and Ajala attributed their victory to constant training and team work.
“We have been training and playing together in the past three years and have always taken our training very seriously and God has been helping us.
“We are very happy with this victory and pray God to continue to keep and protect us for the next tournament,’’ Hussain said.
The duo, however, advised upcoming table tennis players to be disciplined and focused in their games.
