Lafia – The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has intervened in the crisis between the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and the Nigeria Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) in the state.
The two unions had a running battle on the control of motor parks in Keffi and Nasarawa Local Government Areas of the state.
Alhaji Mohammed Udege-Okpoku (APC-Udege/Loko), Chairman House Committee on Works, disclosed this on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lafia.
Udege-Okpoku said that the intervention was to bring sanity to the activities of the two unions in order to safeguard security of lives and property in the state.
Udege-Okpoku said: “We intervened to end the crisis between the two unions’ members in Keffi and Nasarawa local government areas of the state at the instance of Mr Speaker to bring sanity to the sector.
“We invited the parties involved, sat down with them and their state officials. We understood that the case is even before a competent court of jurisdiction.
“We requested them to bring the originating court summon that led the matters to court so that the committee will sit to look at the documents and find an out of court settlement to the problems,” he said.
Udege-Okpoku urged members of both unions to continue to be law abiding and respect constituted authorities in the interest of peace and national development.
He restated the assembly’s commitment to enact laws that have direct bearing on the transport sector in the state.
