ABUJA – Mrs Helen Beyioku-Alase, President, Deaf Women Association of Nigeria (DWAN), Abuja chapter, on Thursday, appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to sign the Disability Bill into law.
She made the call in an address at a seminar with the theme, “Deaf women health awareness”, to mark the 2014 International Day of Persons with Disability in Abuja.
Beyioku-Alase lamented the challenges facing deaf women in Abuja and Nigeria in general in the area of current affairs, health, and news among others.
“There is lack of information on current affairs, health, news, breast cancer, HIV/AIDS and Ebola in sign-language form for the benefit of the deaf.
“Deaf women and girls are easy targets for rapists and human traffickers; they are prone to sexual abuse, unwanted pregnancy, abortion, HIV/AIDS among others.
“They also face discrimination in every place they visit; example, markets, hospitals, schools or other institutions because of communication barrier,” she said.
Beyioku-Alase added that deaf women could not access and benefit from government programmes such as small and medium enterprise, SURE-P due to their condition.
“The deaf pregnant women are usually denied free health care.
“We are appealing to our President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, to sign the disability bill into law as his gift to more than 22.5 million
Nigerians living with disability in the country.” (NAN)
