Lagos – The Phone And Allied Products Dealers Association of Nigeria (PAPDAN) on Wednesday said it would collaborate with the Lagos State Government to enhance security at the computer village in Ikeja.
Mr Godfrey Nwosu, the PAPDAN President, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that a secure market would attract both local and foreign investors to do business in the country.
He noted that the market had only one police post, adding that this was not enough to ensure adequate security.
“This market comprises of more than 500 shops with more than a million people who transact business there daily.
“We have only one police post and this is not enough for a market that has more than five hundred shops.
“We will collaborate with security personnel in Lagos State to beef up the security situation of the market so that customers and manufacturer can transact their business peacefully,’’ Nwosu said.
He said the association had decided to install CCTV cameras in all the nooks and crannies of the market to record daily activities and expose misdeeds.
The PAPDAN president said that the union had decided to set up a central office where nefarious activities of hoodlums could be reported, then transferred to the police authorities.
He said the union would hire security outfits that would move round the market.
“These security personnel will report back to the central office; they will support the police, this is part of our plan to make the market conducive for business.
“We have had discussions with the authorities on how to make the computer village one of the most secure markets where locals and foreigners can transact business.
“We will collaborate with the security agents to ensure the safety of lives and property through our internal plans and strategy to curtail insecurity,’’ he said.
Nwosu appealed to the government to protect local content because of the competition between foreign and local phone manufacturers.
He also urged foreign manufacturers to set up manufacturing, assembling or service centres in the country to create employment for youths.
The PAPDAN president said the Ikeja computer village was the biggest Information and Communication Technology (ICT) street market in Sub-Sahara Africa. (NAN)
