Calabar – The Nigeria Ophthalmic Nurses Association (NONA) is to offer free eye care service to 3,000 people in Akamkpa local government area of Cross River, says a top official of the association.
Mr Bartholomew Sati, National Chairman of the association, disclosed this on Tuesday in Calabar during the 29th annual scientific conference of NONA.
Sati explained that the objective was to promote eye health and prevent blindness.
“We are going to embark on a free eye care services on Sept. 10 in Akampka local government area.
“We are targeting to render this free primary eye care services to over 3,000 indigenes of that area.
“We will treat those with primary eye conditions and where necessary we will give them lenses to correct their sight,’’ Sati said.

He said that those with major eye problems would be referred to secondary and tertiary eye health institutions in the state.
Dr Edet Ikpi, a former Commissioner for Health in the state, who chaired the occasion, said that it was important for health practitioners to offer special assistance to eye patients.
Ikpi commended the association for the gesture.
Dr Thomas Agan, Chief Medical Director, University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), described the eye as an important sense organ in human body that required proper medical check and treatment.
Agan also commended the association for the gesture, saying the hospital was ready to partner with them to improve on the health of the people of the state. (NAN)
