LAGOS – The Shippers Association of Lagos State (SALS) on Thursday urged the Federal Government to confer on the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) some regulatory powers to strengthen its operation.
The President of the association, Mr Jonathan Nicol, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
“The thinking in the shippers association is that government should have put in place the regulatory power before now for the Nigerian Shippers Council in other for it to function adequately.
“If they have not done so, I believe may be government is doing its bit to get that aspect to be in place for the Nigeria Shippers Council. [eap_ad_1] “It has to be in place. You cannot ask security officer to guide for instance the port, a volatile area, without giving them the necessary equipment to work.
“So, we want the Nigerian Shippers Council to be properly regulated; in fact the government should give it the necessary materials to work; it needs the regulatory power.“
The president of the association also spoke of the need for government to provide the council with adequate funds to enable it to carry out its statutory functions.
He said in spite of the financial constraints and challenges, the council would continue to remain committed to playing its role as the commercial regulator of the nation’s ports. (NAN)
