The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned the federal government that it will embark on a nationwide industrial action if it fails to immediately fulfill the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement.
ASUU President Chris Piwuna expressed frustration over the government’s continued failure to address nine critical issues plaguing Nigeria’s public universities.
These issues include stalled renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, withheld salaries, unpaid entitlements, and non-release of revitalization funds and earned academic allowances. Piwuna criticized the government’s neglect of ASUU members in state-owned institutions and growing political interference in university leadership selection.
The ASUU leader called for a “national rebirth through education” and proposed an education summit to address critical issues like funding, university autonomy, and staff welfare. “Our universities should be centres for solutions to national challenges. We are open to dialogue but will not tolerate further erosion of our rights,” he stated.
